@poof: Probably the artifacts result from expanding the range too far. The only technique I remember for setting the parameters optimally was by running through the algorithm once and recording the min and max obtained as a guide, then applying that result to run it again for real.

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that I tried multiplying the components and dividing the displacement scaling mentioned in the Addendum. But when I try to give the displacement map a little bit more range, I get strange artefacts around the sphere border. Do I need to change the 'ew' variable accordingly somehow?

What changes need to be made to Psyark’s calculations so that the displacement map uses more of the 0x00～0xFF range?

[...] The globe needs to be interactive. The user needs to be able to move the globe around and see the it from different perspectives. It also will need to have points of interest on the globe, when they click on the point, it will show some text and one or two pictures in the box. Not really sure what I can do? The example i gave you can do that via a dynamic API rss feed. Poly9 can also remove the logo for a small fee. Here’s some research from my project.
Flash 8 Pro introduces many graphic filters including the Displacement Map Filter which allows you to distort a Movie Clip based on a bitmap's color values. The Displacement Map Filter distorts the colors in one object based on the color of another object. This gives you a distorted effect. The DisplacementMapFilter class uses the pixel values from the specified BitmapData object (called the displacement map image) to perform a displacement of another object on the Stage, such as a Movie Clip instance. You can use this filter to achieve a warped or mottled effect on a BitmapData or Movie Clip instance.

rather than looking for specific kind of distortion done by somebody else, why don't you learn to do it yourself? that was the point of tutorial.
